Uwe johnson biography

Many of his novels explore the contradictions of life in a Germany divided after World War II. Johnson grew up during the difficult war years. In East Germany he studied German at the Universities of Rostock and Leipzig, graduating from the latter in 1956.

In 1983, the fourth volume of Jahrestage was published, but Johnson broke off a reading tour for health reasons. He died on 22 February 1984 in Sheerness in England. His body was not found until 13 March that year. At the time of his death, he had been planning a one-year stay in New York City.

Uwe Johnson ( German pronunciation: [ˈuːvə ˈjoːnzɔn] ( listen); 20 July 1934 – 22 February 1984) was a German writer, editor, and scholar. Johnson was born in Kammin in Pomerania (now Kamień Pomorski, Poland ).

In it he used a montage technique, combining newspaper clippings, notes, and diary entries—as well as the presence of a writer named Uwe Johnson—to examine the issues that continued to engage him. He published the first three volumes upon his return to West Berlin. In 1974 Johnson moved to England, ostensibly to complete his tetralogy.
